Read MoreOK so you’re coming to LA to see the sites, take the kids to Disney, ride the Santa Monica ferris wheel, and see a TV show being filmed in Burbank. First of all, that’s an insane amount of driving. Map these things out before you commit! Second of all, of course you brought your clubs. So where do you sneak away for an early morning round in LA??? There’s got to be a million great courses here, right? WRONG? Well, kind of wrong. Since you don’t belong to Riviera or Bel-Air or Wilshire or Brentwood or on and on and on, you may be stunned to find out that LA-proper has very few solutions, and its probably going to take you 6 hours to play it (Hi Rancho! Still love you.)
Since you’re driving a thousand miles anyways, I’ll give you a few gems North, South, East, and West. Wherever you may find yourself, you should be able to get to one of these pretty easily. Lets start at the top…
RUSTIC CANYON
Located in Moorpark, it might not be the easiest place to get to. I started with it for a reason though. Its hands down my favorite public course in the entire LA area and it’s a steal at around $60. I can’t even tell you how great this place is. You just have to see it.
EL DORADO
Long Beach isn’t too far of a drive from Disney, so if you’re in the area you’ve got to check it out. Bring your straight ball, because the trees lining the fairways will snag any errant shots you may be hitting.
HARDING AND WILSON
Got time for 36 while the kids are at the zoo? These two courses in Griffith Park offer a fun challenge while being affordable and centrally located. There’s also an executive course here if you want to bring the kids with you.
LOS VERDES
A really fun track in Palos Verdes. If you’re staying at Terranea and are looking for more of a challenge than the Terranea 9 hole gives you (also a fun course), Los Verdes gives you 18 beautiful holes at an affordable price with ocean views.
There you go, four great L.A.-area public golf courses to start you off in the right direction. Have fun cruising around so-cal, safe travels and happy golfing everyone!
